My Breastfeeding Journey: Challenges, Lessons and Tips for New Moms

Last Updated: June 2026

The Reality of My Breastfeeding Journey

I still remember holding my baby for the first time and feeling overwhelmed with love, excitement, and fear. Like many new mothers, I assumed breastfeeding would come naturally. After all, it is often described as the most natural thing in the world.

The reality was very different. There were days when I questioned whether my baby was getting enough milk. There were nights when I sat awake, exhausted and emotional, wondering if I was doing something wrong. Every cry felt like a test of my abilities as a new mother.

What surprised me most was how little people talked about the emotional side of breastfeeding. Everyone discussed its benefits, but very few spoke about the self-doubt, the learning curve, and the pressure many mothers silently carry.

Looking back, I wish someone had told me that struggling with breastfeeding does not make you a bad mother. It simply makes you human. That realization changed everything for me and became one of the most important lessons of my breastfeeding journey. Breastfeeding is often described as the most natural way to nourish a baby. While that may be true, what many new mothers do not hear enough about are the challenges, doubts, and emotional ups and downs that can accompany the breastfeeding journey.

When I was pregnant, I imagined breastfeeding would happen naturally. I thought that once my baby arrived, everything would fall into place. However, my actual breastfeeding experience turned out to be very different from what I had expected.

Today, I want to share my breastfeeding journey in the hope of reassuring other new mothers who may be facing similar struggles.

The Beginning of My Breastfeeding Journey

Like many first-time mothers, I was excited and nervous about breastfeeding. I had read books, attended prenatal appointments, and heard countless stories from family and friends. But nothing truly prepares you for those first few days after childbirth.

The initial days were filled with uncertainty. I constantly worried whether my baby was getting enough milk, whether I was feeding correctly, and whether I was doing everything right.

Looking back, I realize these concerns are incredibly common among new mothers.

Common Breastfeeding Challenges I Faced

1. Learning the Correct Latch

One of the biggest challenges during the early days was ensuring a proper latch.

A poor latch can lead to discomfort and make feeding sessions stressful for both mother and baby. It took patience, practice, and guidance before breastfeeding started feeling comfortable.

2. Self-Doubt and Anxiety

Many mothers worry about milk supply at some point. I often questioned whether my baby was getting enough nourishment. Every feeding session seemed like a test, and I found myself constantly seeking reassurance.

Over time, I learned that frequent feeding is normal for newborns and does not necessarily indicate low milk supply.

3. Physical Exhaustion

Breastfeeding can be physically demanding, especially during the newborn stage. The frequent night feeds, lack of sleep, and recovery from childbirth made the first few weeks particularly challenging.

This was a period when I learned the importance of accepting help and prioritizing rest whenever possible.

4. Emotional Challenges

Breastfeeding is not only a physical experience but also an emotional one. There were moments of frustration, tears, and exhaustion. There were also moments of connection, comfort, and immense joy.

The emotional aspect of breastfeeding deserves more discussion and support.

What Helped Me Continue Breastfeeding

Every mother’s experience is unique, but a few things made a significant difference during my breastfeeding journey.

Seek Professional Support

Do not hesitate to reach out to healthcare professionals or lactation consultants if you need guidance.

Sometimes a small adjustment can make breastfeeding much easier.

Stay Hydrated

Breastfeeding mothers need adequate fluids throughout the day. Keeping water nearby during feeding sessions became a simple but effective habit for me.

Focus on Progress, Not Perfection

I gradually stopped comparing my experience with others. Every mother and baby pair is different, and what works for one family may not work for another.

Build a Support System

Encouragement from family members and fellow mothers can make a world of difference during difficult days.

Lessons I Learned from My Breastfeeding Journey

If there is one thing I learned, it is that breastfeeding is a journey rather than a destination. There will be good days and challenging days. There may be moments when you feel confident and moments when you question yourself. Both are completely normal.

The most important lesson I learned was to be kind to myself and trust the process.

Breastfeeding Tips for New Moms

  • Feed your baby on demand during the early weeks.
  • Learn about proper latching techniques.
  • Stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet.
  • Ask for help when needed.
  • Avoid comparing your journey with others.
  • Focus on your baby’s growth and well-being rather than perfection.
  • Take care of your own physical and emotional health.

  2. A tight hug for all the efforts you had put in making things happen. Only a mother can do this. Well, even I had to express milk as I had joined work after 5 months of delivery. In fact, I recently got to know that it’s very important to feed the child in 1st hr of the birth. So there are many such things we get to know as we grow in the journey. But I am sure there are many new mums who can use this posts for good. Very nice posts Kavita.

  3. That is true. Nothing prepares you for the aftermath of childbirth. Early days are really horrible and we dont feel the overwhelming love for babies. Hormones at play. Breast pumps are a great tool to enable mothers to ensure babies have breastmilk and yet be away from baby.

  4. I think this happens with all the moms that try later realise things and feel guilty. But it’s better not to think that much. We do best for our child. Breastfeeding is a beautiful thing and we all want to do it for Children but sometimes circumstances are different.

Must have been a great experience I’m sure. The key to a happy breastfeeding experience is to never give up

  6. Breastfeeding is definitely the best for our babies! And, this bond begins as soon as we give a ur first feed to our child! 🙂
Now that you say, even I didn’t have any lactation consultant:/ we had to figure it out ourselves!
