Benefits of reading books and building a personal library at home

How Reading Books Changed My Life and Made Me a Better Mom

Last Updated: June 2026

“There are more treasures in books than in all the pirates’ loot on Treasure Island.” – Walt Disney

Dear readers, looking back, one of the greatest treasures I have collected in life is not jewelry, gadgets, or material possessions. It is my collection of books. Interestingly, I was not always a book lover. Unlike many avid readers who discover books in childhood, my love for reading began quite late. It was only in my early twenties that I picked up a book outside of my academic textbooks, and little did I know that single decision would change my life forever.

Today, reading books is one of my favorite hobbies, and my personal library is among my most treasured possessions.

How My Reading Journey Began

The first novel I read was by Sidney Sheldon. I still remember being completely captivated by the story, the characters, and the emotions woven into every page. I owe a special thanks to my best friend, who introduced me to the wonderful world of books.

Once I finished that first novel, there was no looking back. Reading quickly transformed from a casual pastime into a lifelong passion. Each book opened a new door, introduced me to new perspectives, and allowed me to experience places and situations far beyond my everyday life.

My Personal Library: A Treasure Trove of Stories

Over the years, my book collection has continued to grow. Every visit to a bookstore feels like stepping into a treasure chest filled with endless possibilities. What started with a few novels has grown into a collection of more than 100 books, and the number keeps increasing.

For me, books are not simply objects sitting on a shelf. Each one carries memories, emotions, lessons, and experiences that have shaped who I am today. My personal library represents years of learning, dreaming, and discovering.

Why I Love Reading Books

One of the biggest reasons I love reading books is their ability to transport me into another world.

Whenever I become immersed in a well-written story, I feel connected to the characters and their journeys. Their joys become my joys, their struggles become my struggles, and their victories leave me inspired. Reading books has taught me empathy, imagination, patience, and curiosity.

In a world filled with constant distractions, books provide a peaceful escape and an opportunity to slow down and reflect.

My Favorite Authors

If I had to choose a few favorite authors, Sidney Sheldon and Dan Brown would undoubtedly be at the top of my list.

Their storytelling abilities kept me turning pages long into the night. Whether it was suspense, mystery, drama, or adventure, their books taught me the power of great storytelling. Over time, I expanded my reading habits and explored works by many different authors, but these two writers played a significant role in developing my love for books.

How Reading Helped Me During Pregnancy and Motherhood

One of the most unexpected benefits of reading came during pregnancy and early motherhood. Like many women, I experienced moments of anxiety, uncertainty, and emotional overwhelm during pregnancy and after childbirth.

Books became my refuge. During difficult days, reading provided comfort and helped me escape from stress, even if only for a short while. It allowed me to recharge mentally and reconnect with myself.

Those quiet moments with a good book helped me navigate some of the most challenging phases of motherhood.

Why I Want My Daughter to Love Reading

As a mother, one of my greatest wishes is to pass on my love of reading to my daughter. I hope she discovers the same joy, wonder, and comfort that books have brought into my life. More importantly, I hope books teach her empathy, creativity, resilience, and the confidence to dream beyond limits.

In an increasingly digital world, I believe books still hold a unique magic that no screen can replace. If my daughter develops a lifelong reading habit, I will consider it one of the greatest gifts I could ever give her.

  • Improves vocabulary and communication skills
