We all know the goodness and importance of breastfeeding. It is a natural process but it indeed requires a lot of patience and practice. I breastfed my little one until she was 2.5 years old but initially I faced a lot of challenges.

Your body goes through a lot of changes during pregnancy and it affects you on an emotional level too. For new moms, it gets challenging to decide what to do and what not as a lot of bits of advice come from each corner of the house. It is always better to believe in your gut feeling and follow the advice of experts when you are in doubt. Every journey of feeding your child is beautiful whether it’s bottles or breasts, at the end of the day we all want a healthy and a happy child.

I am fortunate to be a part of a bloggers community and will always try to spread the information which might help a lot of struggling moms looking to get the right information. As the breast awareness week is going on, I decided to pen down a few tips for all the new moms. Last week, I was invited to be a part of meeting organized by Apollo Cradle, Delhi wherein we discussed breastfeeding in detail with Dr. Geeta Chadha (Senior Consultant and Gynecologist) and Dr. Vandana Sarkar (Lactation Consultant).

Here are few tips for all the new moms or soon-to-be moms to make the breastfeeding journey smooth:

  • Family’s Support makes a lot of difference

The biggest support system for a new mom is her family. She needs all the help possible as not only her body needs rest but her emotional quotient needs pampering too and plays an important role in recovering post-delivery. For the first six weeks, while you’re establishing your breastfeeding, let others help out with chores around the house. Find a mom group, they are all over Facebook or online communities and I can vouch that it will help you for sure.

  • Guidance from a right source of information

There is too much information available on the internet today and people jump in to add more advice to that whenever they get a chance. Right information from the right source is what will help you to make the decision. It is natural to have doubts in your mind as it is a new process for you but make sure to get those clarified from the experts. They know so much and have so many good tips/tricks.

  • Drink a lot of water

I always had a bottle handy before I sat to breastfeed my baby. Drinking enough water or other fluids will keep you healthy and hydrated. It will also help you to make and maintain your breast milk supply.

  • Follow a proper diet

Eat healthily and follow a proper diet routine. Eat nutrient-rich food as you will have the get-up-and-go mentality you need for those 3 a.m. feeding calls. Green veggies, seasonal fruits dairy products are just a few examples that must be added to your diet. I understand it often gets tiring for new moms but try to avoid watching the clock. Let the baby feed as long as they like. Most babies will feed as long as they like and will let go of the breast.

Breast milk is best for your baby. The benefits of breastfeeding extend well beyond basic nutrition. In addition to containing all the vitamins and nutrients your baby needs in the first six months of life, breast milk is packed with disease-fighting substances that protect your baby from illness.

It amazes me how beautifully pen can write what heart truly believes. I am a stubborn daughter, pampered wife, doting mother and free-spirited human being.
